My mother always said she would much prefer to start sewing something from scratch as opposed to altering something. But then she never liked anything vintage very much. (She is still wondering where my sister and I got this bizarre obsession.) I find myself reworking or refitting things all the time.
Months ago we got a old kidney-shaped vanity. The skirt came with it, along with a number of problems. It seems like they were repurposing draperies for the skirt.
1. First, they didn’t follow my rule about getting rid of the extra fabric. So they had overlapped the skirt in the back and that required a million tacks to get it to stay in place.
2. The top edge was very frayed.
3. Admirably, it had been lined. However, when it had been washed the outer fabric had shrunk considerably and the lining hadn’t.
At this point you may well agree with my mama. The fabric is lovely though, a beautiful white, medium weight damask that still hangs beautifully having acquired a certain softness with age.
Good luck with that project – can’t wait to see your magic!
I still don’t believe your darling glasses are anything less than designer! Sorry to hear that you have the same case of absentmindedness that comes with thrifting and creating.
The latest thing I lost was $100 at S&S on Sunday evening… I was so organized with no kids and a neat list too. Sigh.
